Spotlight on Diversity and Heritage - February 2022
The IESNYC recognizes National Black History Month by celebrating our members of African American heritage and spotlighting those who made significant contributions to the field of lighting design.
Inventor and engineer Lewis Howard Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1848. The son of escaped slaves and a Civil War veteran, he collaborated with Hiram Maxim, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. One of Latimer’s greatest inventions was the carbon filament, a vital component of both Edison’s and Maxim’s light bulbs. Latimer helped draft the patent for Bell’s design of the telephone and also designed an improved railroad car bathroom and an early air conditioning unit.
Please make sure to join our Intro to Equity for Lighting Professionals event on February 9th.
