IESNYC Illuminating Equity Calls for Changemakers

The IESNYC supports equity in lighting application and, an important part of that, inclusivity in our professional community. The IESNYC’s commitment to these values depends on the work of the Illuminating Equity task force. We invite passionate and visionary volunteers to join the group.

Equity is more than a meme: it is a foundational principle that enables the lighting profession to reflect and reveal the rich diversity of NYC. This expands opportunities for underrepresented groups, enriches our industry’s knowledge base, fosters innovation, and strengthens a community of support and mentorship that are vital for career development.

The Illuminating Equity task force’s mission concentrates on educational programming but extends to membership and scholarships that cultivate opportunity “without regard to age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or ability status within our community.” We are creating an environment where every member of the lighting community is empowered, supported, and treated with respect. At its best, the IESNYC Illuminating Equity task force is a catalyst for professional excellence.

Are you ready to bring your unique perspective, talents, and energy to the table?

  • Welcome new members from all backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with leaders and peers who are deeply committed to equity and inclusion.
  • Develop educational programs that highlight diverse voices, experiences, and achievements in lighting.
  • Advise on programming that addresses the needs and aspirations of all members.
  • Help build scholarship initiatives that open doors for underrepresented emerging professionals.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations and actions that are changing the face of the lighting community and creating more-equitable environments for end-users.

Broaden the spectrum

Whether you are a student, a seasoned professional, or simply passionate about equity and inclusion, your voice and your effort are needed. Come join the conversation around short-term events and overall strategic guidance. We can already see real change as IESNYC becomes more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all its members. And there’s always more to learn from colleagues on this fraught topic.

The Equity in Lighting (EIL) initiative is a leading force for change across the lighting industry. By partnering with EIL, Light Justice, North American Coalition of Lighting Industry Queers, Asian Lighting Community, and Black United in Lighting & Design, the Illuminating Equity task force leverages existing resources, knowledge, and networks. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.

Sharing best practices, educational materials, and tools, we access the expertise of EIL’s network of speakers and educators from diverse backgrounds. Open discussions on bias, equity, and the future of lighting design are often co-hosted with allied organizations. These events and workshops provide a space for members to share experiences and ask questions, ensuring that community-driven, action-oriented content is broadly relevant.

The IESNYC and our forums should be accessible to all who are studying or practicing lighting – regardless of background. If you are passionate about making a difference, the Illuminating Equity task force wants you!

IESNYC volunteers are shaping the future of our community today. Come help ensure that it is inclusive, innovative, and inspiring for generations to come.
