IES LC Study Group 2025

Considering Joining the IES LC Study Group

ABOUT
The IES LC Study Group is designed for those planning to take the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) Lighting Certification exam. This 10-week online Study Group is an interactive approach to preparing to write the exam. Candidates will develop a competency-focused prioritized study plan through expert facilitation.

Critical information
Enrollment in the LC Study Group is not mandatory in order to take the NCQLP exam. Enrollment in the LC Study Group will NOT register you to take the NCQLP LC Exam, nor ensure a passing score. Registration to take the exam is separate

Value
The cost below includes the classes above, as well as one-year access to the Lighting Library (The IES Lighting Library Standards Collection – Illuminating Engineering Society) the collection of IES Standards, and primary study material for the LC. 

    $800 for IES members with Lighting Library subscription.

    $1100 for Non-Members

The Study Group
The all-virtual LC Study Group will be delivered by a team of qualified individuals from the Lighting Agora, led by Gerry Cornwell LC, and including instructors Dan Blitzer LC, Tom Butters LC., Shirley Coyle, Mary Beth Gotti and Mark Roush. The course will feature 15 unique classes (live delivery), over 10 weeks (about 2 and a half months).

The following is the Study Group schedule. All sessions are online (Zoom meetings) and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm ET. The first six weeks (Tuesdays only) will focus on fundamentals, and the final four weeks (Tuesdays and Thursdays) will combine more advanced topics and practice test material.

Week 3, August 20: Upgrading, Visual Comfort, Design Process
Week 4, August 27: Interior Applications, NFPA 101, NFPA 70
Week 5, September 3: Exterior Applications, Light Trespass
Week 6, September 10: Luminaires & Photometry
Week 7, Sept. 17 and 19: Standard 90.1, LEED, Exam Overview
Week 8, Sept 24 and 26: Calculations
Week 9, Oct 1 and 3: Economics
Week 10, Oct 8 and 10: Controls and Daylighting
Finish October 11: Open Q&A Session

NCQLP Lighting Certification exam
The Exam is offered from October 14 through November 22, at test centers.
All sessions are online, and participants’ questions will be encouraged.
Duration: 90 – 120 minutes per sessions + minimum 120 minutes of homework per week.
Program: 14 sessions, plus an open Q&A on the final day.
